Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
